In June of 2013, after just completing my Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) training with the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS), my firm, Richard Pedranti Architect, received a call from Christie Karpiak and Declan Mulhall inquiring about helping them with a new home design in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After describing this new approach to designing and building a home using building science and modeled performance, my firm was working on its first Passive House project. The Scranton Passive House is a new single family residence in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania for Declan and Christie and their two daughters. The Scranton Passive House website is a chronicle of the project including information about the design and construction of the home as well as the principles of Passive House.
